Feeding the 9 billion

Not just a competition, the Thought For Food project is a contest for the greater good.

An ambitious international competition aimed at finding a solution to feeding 9 billion people by 2050 has launched this week.

Exclusively designed for university students, the second annual Thought For Food contest is on the hunt for a robust business plan and a creative pitch that aims to redress the imbalance of millions going hungry while millions over-consume.

The contest is divided into two rounds during which teams will carry out ‘missions’ with the help of research tools and mentors, researching global food security issues and providing a solution. Project criteria includes creating mass awareness, inciting social change, an idea built to last and disrupts the status quo.

Team sign up closes on 1 April, with the mentors assigned on 5 April. After Round 1, five finalists will receive $1,000 seed money to turn their idea into a prototype. The final in Septmber will take them to Berlin with their pitch in the hope of being awarded up to $10,000 to take their project forward.
