Olive oil jug ban backtrack

Public reaction to the announced plans have been so strong that it was decided that the ban would not go ahead.

Dacian Ciolos, the European Commissioner for Agriculture said it was a “measure intended to help consumers, to protect and inform them, but it is clear that it cannot attract consumer support.”

Restaurateurs and local artisan producers will breathe a sigh of relief now that the proposed ban has been abandoned, as the criticism – that producers that supply directly to restaurants in bulk, or without tamper-resistant bottles would be affected disproportionately – has been taken on board.
